Pioneer of the Surf Industry: Hap Jacobs (Dudley George Jacobs, 1930–2021) was a legendary surfer and shaper from Hermosa Beach, California. He began shaping in the 1950s and was instrumental in turning board-making from a backyard hobby into a legitimate industry. In 1960, Jacobs established his own brand, Jacobs Surfboards, in Hermosa Beach. He became renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail—qualities that set his boards apart. Hap Jacobs is highly regarded not just for the quality of his boards, but also for his reserved, gentlemanly nature and his mentorship of many others in the surf industry.
